Hezbollah slams "Zionist piracy" on Gaza-bound vessel

BEIRUT: Hezbollah praised Wednesday the activists who tried to breach the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip this week, condemning Israel’s interception of their yacht as an act of “Zionist piracy.”

“[We salute] all those who participated in the Freedom Flotilla 2, those who did not manage to take part and those who were fought and prevented from assisting in the breaking of the blockade of Gaza and its oppressed people,” Hezbollah said in a statement.

Israel’s navy intercepted Tuesday the French MV Dignite/Al-Karam as it tried to breach the blockade of the Palestinian enclave of Gaza. The vessel was then escorted to shore in Israel and its occupants detained.

“[We condemn] this new [act of] Zionist piracy targeting peaceful activists from all over the world,” the Hezbollah statement said, adding that the activists had sought to alleviate the suffering of Gazans by Israel.

The statement also slammed the United Nations and international human rights troops for failing to condemn the Israeli action.

In May 2010, Israeli commandos launched a deadly raid on a six-vessel flotilla bound for Gaza which led to the death of nine activists.

Hezbollah said the operation was a continuation of a series of crimes by the Jewish state against Palestinians, including “murder, intensification of settlements and massacres committed with the blessing of the United States.”
