RAMALLAH, December 31, 2011 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas Saturday received a letter from Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov regarding the situation in the region, especially in Syria.
The Russian ambassador to the Palestinian Territory, Alexander Rudakov, handed Abbas the letter, which addressed the need to support and increase the number of Arab monitors in Syria, as well as to find a way to end the current crisis to reunite Syria and avoid a civil war in the country.
Abbas briefed Rudakov on the Quartet efforts and of his upcoming visit to Moscow in January.
He stressed that Israel must uphold its obligations to halt settlements, accept the principle of the two-state solution, and release veteran Palestinian prisoners to resume negotiations by the next Quartet meeting in January 26.
