Prisoners are awaiting word on the next steps in the prisoner swap.
BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israel is planning to implement the second phase of a prisoner swap deal on Dec. 18, according to prisoners who say the prison service has initiated steps to transfer some detainees.
A number of Palestinian prisoners inside Israeli jails told Ma’an that authorities had begun making arrangements to complete the deal, although they have not yet informed the prisoners who were selected.
According to several Israeli journalists, the prison service may attempt to delay the list of names as long as possible in order to block right-wing activists and others from attempting to object to the move in courts.
If all goes according to plan, the list of 150 prisoners will be announced by the end of the week and implemented as soon as Sunday in coordination with the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The developments came as an Israeli military official arrived in Cairo for talks on carrying out the second stage of the prisoner swap, sources at Cairo's airport told the German press agency DPA.
The prisoners minister in the Gaza Strip, meanwhile, says Egypt has offered assurances that the deal will be completed by the 18th, which is two months since Gilad Shalit was released in October.
