JERUSALEM, January 8, 2012 (WAFA) – An Israeli plan to build a statue for the late Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi on an East Jerusalem plot is actually a pretext to seize Palestinian land, the Jerusalem Center for Social and Economic Rights (JCSER) said in a statement Sunday.
It denounced the project proposed by Jerusalem city councilman Meir Margalit of Meretz, which it said contradicts with the councilman party’s opposition to Israeli government seizure of Palestinian land in East Jerusalem.
It said the project comes at a time the Israeli authorities ban Palestinian residents from using their land to build badly needed housing on it and demolish houses in the Palestinian neighborhoods.
The Israeli occupation authority is the last to celebrate the human rights activist Gandhi, added the statement.
Fatah Revolutionary Council member Dimitri Diliani told WAFA that the Israeli gesture is another land grab scheme. He said that “our objection is not against the great Indian leader, rather over the Israeli occupation intentions behind this move.”Palestine News & Info Agency - WAFA
