Arab League Condemns Israeli Attack on Red Cross Office, Arrest of Lawmakers‏

CAIRO, January 24, 2012 (WAFA) – The Arab League condemned, in a press release issued on Tuesday, the Israeli attack on the International Red Cross headquarters in East Jerusalem and the arrest of two Hamas officials.

The League considered these Israeli measures a new crime added to Israel’s track record in targeting the institutions of the international community, particularly the United Nations.

It said that such Israeli crime is a violation of Article 49 of the 1949 Fourth Geneva Convention that prohibits on Israel, as being an occupation force, the compulsory transfer of Palestinians regardless of the motives.

It added that this Israeli measure is a beginning of an Israeli campaign of kidnappings and mass expulsion of Jerusalemite citizens, whom Israel illegally stripped of their inherent right in the holy city of Jerusalem.

The Arab league stressed that this grave violation underestimates the United Nations through targeting its headquarters, similar to what happened during the 2008-2009 war on Gaza when it shelled UNRWA’s headquarter.

It called upon the international community, particularly its security council and permanent member states responsible for the protection of international peace and security, to take a firm position to stop this Israeli aggression, to hold Israeli accountable and not to treat it as a state above the law, as well as to force it to immediately release the detained Palestinian officials and cancel the expulsion decision against them.
