GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- A massive explosion has killed at least one person and injured five other Palestinians in the southern Gaza Strip, a medical official said late Saturday.

Adham Abu Salmiya said the charred corpse of a member of the al-Qaisy family was transferred to Abu Yousef al-Najjar Hospital after the explosion in Rafah, near Egypt.

The home struck by the blast belonged to a senior commander of the Popular Resistance Committees, residents and witnesses said. A Ma'an correspondent said parts of the city "literally shook".

The cause was not immediately clear. There were no reports of clashes in the area, and an Israeli military spokeswoman said the incident was not related to army activity.

The PRC denied reports identifying the victim as PRC secretary-general Zuhair al-Qaisy.
