Arab League Calls Ban to Intervene to End Prisoners’ Suffering

Palestine News & Info Agency - WAFA

CAIRO, January 4, 2012 (WAFA) – Secretary General of the Arab League, Nabil el-Araby, Wednesday called on the United Nation General Secretary, Ban Ki-moon, to seriously intervene to end the suffering of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, said Palestine’s ambassador to the Arab League, Mohammad Sbeih.

Sbeih told reporters that el-Araby sent a message to Ban, explaining that Israeli jails contain a large number of Palestinian prisoners, including 52 who have been imprisoned for more than two decades.

El-Araby stressed the importance of the UN involvement in protecting international agreements as the Israeli practices against Palestinian detainees in jails violate the Geneva Fourth Convention and the Hague Conventions, said Sbeih.

He condemned the Israeli racist practices against prisoners and their families during visits and stressed that Israel is obliged to commit to international humanitarian resolutions.
