Meeting Aims to Force Israel to Meet Obligations, says Erekat

RAMALLAH, January 2, 2012 (WAFA) –The Quartet meeting scheduled on Tuesday in the Jordanian capital Amman aims to put pressure on the Israeli government to meet its international obligations, including the road map, said PLO Executive Committee member Saeb Erekat on Monday.

He said in a press conference in Ramallah that the meeting will be held in Jordan with both the Palestinian and Israeli sides present.
Erekat will represent the Palestinian side and Yitzhak Molcho the Israeli government.
Erekat praised Jordanian efforts to create solid basis to resume bilateral negotiations.
The face-to-face meeting, the first for the two sides in 15 months, was organized by Jordan and will be held under the auspices of Jordan's Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh.

Erekat called on the Israeli government to take advantage of the positive opportunities offered by King Abdullah II of Jordan and stop settlement activities, accept the two-state solution on the 1967 borders and release Palestinian prisoners in order to start serious negotiations to end the occupation and establish a Palestinian state.

Erekat said that the “PLO was never against negotiations with the Israeli government.”
He said the Palestinians have already presented their proposals regarding borders and security as stated by the Quartet’s September 23 statement
