CAIRO — Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal was in Cairo on Friday to discuss Palestinian reconciliation efforts with Egyptian officials and the Arab League.

"Hamas is committed to achieving reconciliation to end the Palestinian division, form a government, hold elections and release all detainees," Meshaal said after talks with Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi.
Since 2007, the Palestinian territories have been politically divided into two separate territories, with the Fatah of Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas largely ruling the West Bank and Hamas governing Gaza.
In May, following years of bitter rivalry, the two factions signed a reconciliation deal in Cairo whose implementation has since stalled.
